NEIGHBOURHOOD PRISONS

In Germany, as in most European nations, prisons often lie within towns and cities; European prisons & jails are older than the housing estates and urban developments that, ultimately, came to surround them.

Biography

German photographer Christiane Feser (b. Würzburg Germany, 1977) documents seemingly normal sites and things in her work. However many of her photographs have a story behind them such as her ‘prison’ series which document parks and playgrounds that also happen to be nearby prisons, or her ‘streets’ series of digitally ‘cleaned up’ streets.

Feser’s photographs have been exhibited internationally. She has received numerous awards and grants including the German Youth Foto Award (1999 ); the diploma sponsorship by the “Friends of the University of Art & Design Offenbach” (2005);

Nomination for the Saar Ferngas Susidy Award (2006); Charlotte Prinz Art Fellowship by the city of Darmstadt (2006- 2008) and the Moldau Fellowship, Hessian Ministry for Science and Art (2008)

Her work is included in the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
