Aside

"A journey through the villages of Upper Swabia. The photos not only document the charm which emanates from the rural areas, but also evoke the extent to which vacancies already exist, and their consequences. Factors such as shifts in demographics and the economic appeal of urban centers could strengthen this trend in the future. To move to a large city, away from the countryside, seems to many people to be just a logical step. Yet, in doing so, the people do not leave just their community; often they also leave a piece of their home and identity behind."

NEULAND (Germany, 1989-1999)

Claudio Hils documented the first decade of the new Germany, which he calls NEULAND. After the fall of the Wall in 1989 the mood was euphoric: from that moment the East and West would become one, and the West German social model would symbolise the end result. Hils was deeply sceptical about the optimistic mood, and decided to do his own investigation. In NEULAND he shows that the discrepancies between East and West Germany have indeed become smaller, but they certainly have not disappeared. Traditional differences have still not been overcome, and provoke mutual resentment. The then extremely positive mood in the German media to a large extent ignored the complexity of the reunification process.

ARCHIVE_BELFAST (Northern Ireland, 2004)

The peace accord in 1998 laid the foundations for the political future of Northern Ireland. But traces of the troubled past are to be found everywhere in that land. For instance, Belfast has literally been shaped by the decades of conflict between Catholics and Protestants. The infrastructure of the city has been constructed in response to the struggle, with clearly separated neighborhoods. Claudio Hils carried out 'archaeological' research in the Belfast archives, where the stories of the past have been laid to rest. This has enabled him to expose the structures that form the basis for contemporary Northern Ireland, for which these often hidden archives are the key.

DREAM CITY (2001)

Urbanization is proceeding at a rapid pace all over the world. Three-quarters of all children being born today are born in cities. Particularly in Africa, Latin America and Asia cities are swelling to unmanageable proportions. Historic urban elements fall prey to commercial initiatives, and in the absence of any master plan a potpourri of architecture and infrastructure, old and new, arises. Claudio Hils photographed the Thai capital, Bangkok, which is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. He focused in particularly on details, since the city has become too large to be captured in general photos now. Moreover, it is precisely these ordinary elements that define the real character of the city.
