STORIES FROM UNDERGROUND
Colette Campbell-Jones (USA) has produced a cultural document about the vanished coal mines of Wales. Drawing on centuries-old oral traditions, Stories from underground reconstructs a picture of a strong community, shrouded in an archetypal darkness.
Biography
Colette Campbell-Jones has a masterdegree in photography as well as in psychology. The photographic process for the series Stories from Underground evolved out of thinking about how imagery provides insight into the ways psychological mechanisms filter and shape our sense of reality--how we perceive, remember and dream. Campbell-Jones combined documents with manipulated digital imagery to construct linkages between contemporary stories and their universal counterparts existing at the level of archetype and myth. The work is printed to reference drawing and printmaking processes while simultaneously retaining a “purchase of the Real” unique to the photograph.
