THE DISOWNED AND DENIED: Stateless Rohingya Refugees of Burma

The Rohingya people of Burma are among the most voiceless and under reported refugee communities in the world. They have a complicated history within South-East Asia. Since 1978’s Operation Dragon King by the Burmese military, which resulted in their killing and rape as well as the destruction of their mosques and the intensification of religious persecution, 200,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh. Those that stayed in Burma have been denied citizenship due to their religious beliefs and no longer have access to education and many employment opportunities. And furthermore, according to Amnesty International, they are “subjected to various forms of extortion and arbitrary taxation; land confiscation; forced eviction and house destruction; and financial restrictions on marriage.” Caught at the margins of multiple South-East Asian societies, the Rohingya live in the camps as registered refugees and or as illegal immigrants in Bangladesh and Thailand.
