Tjibbe Hooghiemstra

IMAGINING THE COSMOS (2011-2016)

In this selection from his work, Tjibbe Hooghiemstra shows the possibilities of reading space through images. The direct and impulsive photographs show an illusion of reality and seem to function more like mental images rather than pictorial images – objectivity is hard to find. Hooghiemstra uses his camera not as a reproduction technique, but as a tool for drawing. Whether he is taking photographs during a long sea voyage on a merchant ship, in the privacy of his studio or in the hubbub of Tokyo, the photographs evoke an experience of space with a melancholic undertone.
