Lecture Alejandro Chaskielberg |
| | 2011 Sony Photographer of the Year visits Noorderlicht
The Argentinian photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg is one of the six photographers working on 'The Sweet and Sour Story of Sugar' - the international photography project on globalization and sugar by Noorderlicht. Chaskielberg visited the remains of the sugar industry in Surinam and the Netherlands. In his lecture he recounts his experiences and the differences and similarities between working here and there. By means of his photographic work from Surinam, he addresses his own unique way of working. Using technical cameras and exposure times that can run for minutes, he creates 'dreamscapes' by photographing places at night, and having people function as actors in his scenes.

With Oculus, photographer Ken Schles trains his eye and his pen on an inward analysis, focusing on the connections between images and memory. An intimate, humane and ultimately poetic work set off by chance encounters with mortality and memory loss, Oculus is a moving testament made by an artist taking stock.
The book Oculus is a personal follow-up to his acclaimed 2009 release, A New History of Photography.
