Noorderlicht Photofestival 2010

Still on show through 31 October

“Documentary photography in the best tradition of Noorderlicht”

“Noorderlicht presents an impressive diptych”

These two quotes from the Dutch press led us into the remaining two weeks of the festival. The main exhibitions of this year’s festival can be viewed until 31 October in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.

Guided Tours

During the last three weekends of the festival a number of guided tours will take place in the Fries Museum. Reyer Boxem, Harry Cock and Leo Erken, respectively, will give their view about the exhibited work. Please check our website for more information and reservations.

From 16 October two new exhibitions

Apart from the festival, two new exhibitions are programmed in our very own photo gallery in Groningen: Fantastic Photography and Kop der Veur. Read below for more information.

Pieter Henket

Fantastic Photography

"In the end a picture is your vision of the person meeting your camera. It is a story of two souls meeting – a story told all in one frame."

Pieter Henket left for New York when he was nineteen to study at the Film Academy there. After two weeks he met film director Joel Schumacher, who offered him the opportunity to work in the industry. A career in the film business lay on the horizon.

However, Pieter Henket’s fascination with capturing a story in just one single image eventually brought him around to photography. “For me, an image,” he says, “is a cinematic scene where a unique use of lighting demands that the viewer pay attention to a central subject”. Throughout his work these characteristics are what made his signature as a photographer.

Henket recently has begun to focus increasingly on portrait photography. His iconic photo for the first album by the pop phenomenon Lady Gaga was included in the American Woman exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

The exhibition will be opened on 22 October at 5:00 p.m. by Kees van Twist, director of the Groninger Museum. Pieter Henket will present a portrait to the Dutch actress Carice van Houten.

Kop der Veur

Jan-Dirk van der Burg

Post Middendorp Commission 2009

This exhibition is the outcome of the 2009 Post Middendorp photography commission, which had as its theme ‘Groningen Fire’. The Province of Groningen awards this commission every two years, with the stated purpose of making a contribution to 'the visual historiography of our province'.

For this commission Van der Burg did a photographic investigation of political 'fire'. In Kop der Veur he shows Groningers who, from Appingedam to Zuurdijk, are occupied with politics in all its forms.
