Robert Mulder - Jewish Cemeteries in the Province of Groningen

The 25 Jewish cemeteries in the province of Groningen testify to the once flourishing Jewish life there. The texts on the tombstones make up an archive in stone, as it were, that can tell us a lot about the ‘vanished Mediene’ and the people who lived there. For every cemetery in the exhibition, various persons, of all walks of life, are spotlighted - from professors and rabbis to cattle dealers and market women.

The fortress town of Bourtange lies in the beautiful Westerwolde. It was laid out in 1593, and reconstructed in the 1960s. The former synagogue dates from 1842. The smartly restored building is the only synagogue along the Dutch-German border to be found in its original condition
