This project is the result of Johan Nieuwenhuize's stint as artist-in-residence at the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing in 2009. His research into cultural goods in the lives of Chinese people combines still-lifes with self-portraits and photographs of the sky. The still-lifes were chiefly made in the immediate surroundings of migrant workers in Beijing. For the self-portraits Johan had his own clothing copied by a Chinese tailor, and in turn copied the behaviour of the Chinese. The photographs of the sky above the places where he photographed the still-lifes are literally orientation markers in abstract form.
