When Art Meets Science

The When Art Meets Science foundation (WAMS) aims to stimulate the interaction and collaboration between artists and scientists.

The aim of the project “WAMS #1: Data Rush: phase 1: reflection” is to increase awareness of these developments in society, and to stimulate scientific and artistic developments in this field. The project is a prelude to a follow-up programme in which a number of artists and scientists are invited to collectively work on a scientific and artistic result.

WAMS organised the event in the Noorderlicht exhibition "Data Rush" involving objects and installations of the following artists: Christopher Baker, James Bridle, Sterling Crispin, Simon Høgsberg, Wendy McMurdo, Jennifer Morone, Joyce Overheul, Rutger Prins, Ivar Veermäe, and Addie Wagenknecht. WAMS also organised a debate between artists and scientist, and a series of lectures.

WAMS is grateful for the financial support given by the following organisations to organise these events: Adessium Foundation, Kunstraad Groningen, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, and the Privacy & Identity Lab.

Fotobookfestival Kassel

The project 'On Daido' was conceived by the festival in Kassel, as a limited edition photobook that pays homage to Daido Moriyama. This is the first presentation as an exhibition, jointly produced by the Fotobookfestival and Noorderlicht.

Photo commissions

Noorderlicht commissioned Mari Bastashevski and Mark Curran to produce new photo-based work for Data Rush. These commisions were done in collaboration with, and funded by, the Photoreporter festival in St.Brieuc, France and North East Photography Network (NEPN) in Sunderland, Great Britain, respectively.
