Marrigje de Maar - Curtains Ajar

At Home in Karelia

How do people express their cultural background in the decoration of their homes? With that question in mind Marrigje de Maar in 2003 travelled to the east of Finland, an almost unknown remote corner of Europe. On both sides of the Finnish-Russian border, a region formerly known as Karelia, she photographed living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms.

She was recently rewarded with the second prize in the category 'Foreign Documentary Photography' of the Silver Camera competition for Dutch photojournalism for this series. De Maar (1944) is a remarkable talent. Only at the age of 54 she entered Art Academy Minerva to discover her knack for photography. In June of this year she will graduate.
