“Noorderlicht laat zien hoe belangrijk een culturele organisatie kan zijn in een regio, als aanjager van deskundigheid en ambitie en daarmee uiteindelijk van de regionale economie. Het noorden blinkt niet erg uit in haar ambities met betrekking tot het vakgebied ‘boeken’. Noorderlicht doet dat wel.”

“Mijn favoriete Noorderlicht-tentoonstelling was ‘Nazar - Arab eyes’ in 2004. Op het hoogtepunt van de 9/11-spanningen en de oorlogen in Afghanistan als Irak, ging de expositie niet alleen in op deze kwesties, maar werd ook een perspectief geboden dat veel verder ging dan de mainstream opvattingen. Voor mij zat in deze tentoonstelling alles waar Noorderlicht voor staat.”

Afgelopen woensdag 17 oktober presenteerde ik het boek 'Northern Ghana Life' in Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam. Welke overwegingen zijn gemaakt in het curatieproces van de fotografen en afbeeldingen? Welk verhaal vertelt het project ons? Sterre Sprengers interviewde mij en fotograaf Patrick Willocq.

For this 20th edition of European Eyes on Japan/Japan Today, Alexandra Pace from Malta and Alice Wielinga from the Netherlands turned their cameras on Aomori prefecture.

To select a Dutch photographer, we sought help from the Noorderlicht, organizer of photo festival held every other year in Groningen and Leeuwarden in the northern Netherlands. Among the proposals, I saw a few aspects in Alice Wielinga’s ideas which I was not sure about, but more than anything, her unique visuals captured my eye. One of the reasons for my concern was the fact that she would focus on the Nebuta Festival, which all Japanese are familiar with. With the Nebuta Festival, even if you have not seen it for yourself, just hearing the name immediately conjures vivid images of festival floats moving in a procession through the darkness. Considering the brief shooting time frame, it seemed that it would not be very easy to show the Nebuta Festival from a new perspective. As I continued my research, however, I belatedly realized that what is “painted” through “Nebuta” are “still” scenes. The fusion of these picturesque and photographic elements is one of the characteristics of Wielinga’s pwork, even if the forms are totally different. I expected that these elements would synergize and cause a reaction.

Wat is echt en wat is nep?

Het zegt al heel veel dat we ons deze vraag tegenwoordig stellen als het gaat over natuur. Want de natuur van de natuur is toch, zou je zeggen, dat die natuurlijk is. Maar zo simpel ligt dat dus niet meer. En dat is ook waarom het thema van dit festival, onze dubbelzinnige relatie met de natuur, zo goed gekozen is.

The mundane side of space travel

Monica Alcazar-Duarte has been working on her project The New Colonists for the past three years now. This has resulted in an interactive installation which reflects on the adventurous side of space exploration, promoting solidarity through emphasizing the import of meticulous preparations for such travels. Monica: “The object is very sci fi - like something that might go into space - and it is using the language of the extraordinary side of space exploration: very exotic and scientific. That is a trick because when you are attracted to it and you can be fascinated by it, but the inside is very mundane.”

De bijzondere locaties van NUCLEUS

De chaos is voorbij en er heerst een jubelstemming in het Noorderlicht kantoor: het is bijna zo ver! Inmiddels wordt er geen onderscheid meer gemaakt tussen weekdag en weekend. Deze laatste dagen gaan om improvisatie, waarbij functies bijna volledig worden losgelaten in dienst van het grote festival productieapparaat. Om deze creatieve dynamiek in kaart te brengen, spreek ik Regina Broersma, festival coordinator sinds 2016. Als er iemand is die de improvisatie-nood tot deugd heeft gemaakt, is zij het wel.

Backstage bij NUCLEUS

Het kantoor van Noorderlicht is voor het oningewijde oog een totale chaos. Elke computer is bezet, bureau’s zijn bezaaid met proefdrukken van persberichten en de vergaderzaal is omgetoverd tot foto-droogruimte. Het fascinerende verhaal van wat hier elk jaar achter de schermen ter voorbereiding van het jaarlijkse festival gebeurt, is voor het publiek niet te zien en dat is jammer. Om de backstage van NUCLEUS in beeld te brengen, heb ik een aantal medewerkers gevraagd om hun ervaringen van het festival met mij, en met jou, te delen.
